What I Want v.s. What I am Capable of
Lots of
People send me LinkedIn messages requesting for any employment opportunity in the
company I work. Mostly, I follow the standard procedures and help them as far as
it is possible. Sometimes, I receive a strange request like "Can I get a
job which I want"?
When I
was evaluating the notion of 'what I want' and 'what I am capable of', there
came a thought about the mentioned phrases. First,
What I want is related to the desire which reflects the wishes of individual
for themselves. Sometimes such view are inculcated by others who always praise without
reason. For example, saying that you have a great potential to a person who has
no knowledge and experience of a particular field results in raising the false
hopes. However, people are more judgmental and accurate in assessing others but
they judge as per their own criteria and environment (not as per job
requirement). Keeping such situations in mind, the image of self should be very
clear when you are looking for What I want. Make sure what you want is
reasonable not fantasy. Second, What I am capable of is one strong, challenging
and adventurous state where you test yourself and come to know what you can
really do. Challenges make you go ahead and improve your bar . There are two
aspects of this notion. First, it is perceived after testing your limits.
That, which is Good. Other one is percieved before testing your
abilities and capabilities which is again based on false perception or
misjudgment of what we are.
Rarely, people select what they want to be. People
usually cannot select what they can be. Let the selection process be done by
the recruitment specialist. There could be lapses in the organizations where the
true talent are kept to rust while the prejudice and nepotism is always makes
it place. Organizations must do recruitment on merit and hire the true talent
for the growth of company and employee. Right person at the right job does make a difference.
One
should go through assessment and evaluations so that they may know about their real
capabilities. After that they must go for the job which is best suitable to them. They
must challenge themselves constantly and
improve so they can grow.
I
personally believe you are capable. Test your limits and achieve the
impossible.
